Twinkling Shadows, 2020, Laser cutting on black sparkle acrylic sheet, 12 x 12 in

Soroor, 2020, Celine relief and glass paint on framed glass sheet, 5 x 8 in

Soroor reflects on the ornate objects I grew up around in my childhood homes. Contemplations, 2020, Laser engraving on iridescent acrylic sheet, 10 x 10 in

The video documents my exploration with how light is reflected from the work and the space it activates. The possibilities of taking these geometric patterns and having them be more than just the patterns they are on the acrylic sheet.

Blossoms, 2020, Celine relief and glass paint on glass sheet, 12 x 16 in

As a child, I would spend hours sitting on the Persian carpet in my room, playing with my toys. Constantly and continuously admiring the repetitiveness of the pattern and the intricacy. This work focuses on the memory I carry of a small portion of the carpet I spent so long looking at but never really understanding the significance and history behind it.

Rose Reflection, 2020, Laser engraving on iridescent acrylic sheet, 2 x 2 in

The video documents my exploration with how light is reflected from the work and the space it activates. The possibilities of taking these geometric patterns and having them be more than just the patterns they are on the acrylic sheet. But the patterns they can be outside of the work itself.

Contemplations, 2020, Laser engraving on iridescent acrylic sheet, 10 x 10 in

The iridescences of Contemplations allow for reflections and shadows to cascade over the space in many different colours and shapes. Depending on where one stands in the space a new perspective of reflections and light can be brought on making the work ever-changing as is the ever-changing nature of the world around us and the inferiority complexes one can have having to live in two different worlds.

Contemplations, 2020, Laser engraving on iridescent acrylic sheet, 10 x 10 in

This work combines the iridescent acrylic sheet with the reflections cascaded on the wall and my mother, reading a poem from The Divan of Ghazaliyat Hafez by the Persian poet Hafez. This one of the many poems she would read to me as a child and her voice to me is a reflection of her past, where she came from and how hard she worked.

Phosphorescence, 2020, Laser engraving on blue fluorescent acrylic sheet, 12 x 12 in

A unique fogginess was created when the blue fluorescent acrylic sheet was laser engraved into. As I continue to observe it, I reflect on the faint memories I have as a child of sitting on my grandmother’s lap as she teaches me how to speak Farsi. For so long I wondered how I was able to understand what others were saying when they would speak Farsi, and why I couldn’t speak it myself.
